In Memorium: Betty Burbank
This past Sunday, my beautiful grandmother Betty Burbank passed away. There’s so much of which to remember fondly but nothing tops our great Thanksgiving feasts. A blessing to eat good food in itself, my grandma really knew how to throw down in the kitchen…unarguably the best mashed potatoes and turkey, cranberry sauce, and about 3000 other things that many of you know we fill ourselves with on that Joyful day. We would always scream at her to get out of the kitchen and sit down and eat because she’d still be cooking as we were eating…COMMITMENT. Walks on the boardwalk, watching countless Murder She Wrote episodes with her and my Poppy, the candy jar that always had something new in it every time…the list goes on.
Even though I take comfort in knowing that she’s with my grandpa flying with the angels, the world is a little darker because she is no longer here. Betty Burbank was a tremendous wife, mother, and grandmother…a beautiful mezzo soprano who loved to sing…she was a very merry lady, loved her whisky sours, and was devoted to her family. She will be very missed.
Please, in the comments on this post, leave your favorite memory of your grandma. I’d love to know what all of you remember or have that makes that relationship so special to you.
In closing, I leave you with a poem that I feel perfectly articulates gammy:
A wife, a mother, a grandma too,
This is the legacy we have from you.
You taught us love and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a wife not just as a mother.
For all of us you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,
Your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep.
