Fab Music Challenge
My next series of posts will focus on the value of music. People often refer to music and performance art as “entertainment.” Of course listening to a beautiful symphony or watching a moving performance is entertaining, but the role of music in our lives is so much more than entertainment. Over the next few blogs, I will discuss how important music is to our survival and how issues like piracy reduce music to a mere commodity.
For anyone doubting the strong claim I just made, I encourage you to think about what your life would look like without music. You can’t turn on the television or the radio without hearing it – even the News and programs like NPR use it. Wouldn’t be able to walk into a grocery store, a salon or most lobbies of office buildings. Imagine exercising without the benefit of music. What would attending a sports game be like without a band, performers, or music to introduce the players? Most religious services and celebrations use some form of music. Parties and Weddings would cease to feel like celebrations without music. Driving would be insanely boring without music.
Before my next installment, I am encouraging everyone to take what I’m calling the #FabMusicChallenge. Over the course of one day, count the number of times you encounter music. Did you listen to music on your commute to work? Was it playing when you stepped into a store? Could you hear someone playing an instrument in the building where you live? Did you walk by a performer on the street? After you conduct your tally, reply to this post, Tweet using the hashtag, post on my Facebook page or send me a message with your results. Feel free to mention anything of note (pun intended) like how music made a difference in your day or if you were surprised at the number of times you heard music. I’ll reveal the results and any “shareworthy” responses in my next blog post.
